Unattended Children Policy
Use of the library is encouraged as our library serves the needs of all members of the community. Unattended children present a significant problem when the library closes. This is particularly apparent when the library closes earlier than usual due to unforeseen weather conditions or other emergencies.
The librarys paid staff and/or volunteers will take every reasonable precaution to guarantee the safety of unattended children. Accordingly, the library has adopted the following unattended children policy.
- Use of the library by unattended children is a privilege. Proper behavior of unattended children is a necessary requirement for continued use of the librarys facilities.
- Library personnel are not responsible to provide care for unattended children.
- If unattended children are in the building when the library is ready to close, the children will be asked how they will be going home. Those children who arrived at the library by walking or riding their bike will be allowed to leave in the same fashion. Those children who are expecting a ride from a parent or guardian will continue to remain in the library with the library staff.
- Unattended children who are waiting for a ride will be able to use the telephone to call home.
- Library staff will not take unattended children home.
- If unattended children are not picked up within 20 minutes and a staff member is unable to remain at the library, board members will be contacted in the following order:
Joan Brenton: 474-5114 Dan Frascella: 678-3019
Proper attention to these procedures by parents or guardians and library staff will provide for the safety of the children in a reasonable and responsible fashion.
